Vision
Art is a vital means for children to communicate their thoughts and experiences. We deliver consistent opportunities to discover, experiment and produce work while developing visual communication abilities.
From Early Years through Year 6, learners engage with three yearly units emphasising drawing, painting and three-dimensional creation. Instruction centres on five key areas: learning about artists and their context, use of media and tools, developing technical skills, exploring ideas, and making and presenting finished pieces.
Students examine diverse artists and artistic movements across historical periods and geographic regions, deepening their understanding of how art mirrors contemporary society. We encourage creative risk-taking and learning from errors throughout the creative process, with regular peer and self-reflection to boost confidence.
By the end of primary education, children demonstrate proficiency in drawing, painting and sculptural work. They can plan, create and talk about their work with confidence and express themselves artistically.
Teaching approach
Each unit spans eight lessons during dedicated art weeks, balancing instructional content with creative exploration. Drawing, painting or modelling serves as the primary vehicle for engaging core concepts, always connecting historical artists to students’ own thoughts and experiences.
Ensuring progress for all
Teaching employs repeated key concepts across units with varied contexts to strengthen foundational understanding. Teachers identify typical knowledge gaps beforehand, allowing for targeted instruction. Responsive classroom assessment helps educators identify student comprehension and address misconceptions promptly. Scaffolded activities ensure comprehensive participation and success for all learners.
