Vision
We aim to inspire pupils to explore the history of their country, Jewish heritage and the wider world. From Early Years through Year 6, students develop an understanding of life’s complexity and learn from the past to become confident, responsible members of the community.
The curriculum balances substantive knowledge with disciplinary concepts, encouraging critical thinking and evidence analysis. We emphasise appreciating diverse cultures and recognising historical complexity to foster respect, empathy and a deeper appreciation of diversity.
Teaching approach
History is organised into three four-week blocks annually, with eight lessons per unit. Each lesson follows a structured format: retrieval practice, links to prior learning, explanation, guided practice, assessment questions, independent work and reflection.
We teach substantive concepts tied to specific periods, events and people alongside disciplinary concepts to support historical thinking. Teaching strategies include targeted questioning, cold calling, and opportunities for source analysis and debate. Tasks emphasise deep thinking and solid content understanding.
Diversity is promoted by studying people, cultures and historical figures from around the world.
Supporting progress
Concepts are revisited as pupils advance through year groups, building knowledge systematically. Pre-unit assessments inform planning and identify misconceptions. Teachers use responsive instruction and formative assessment to address gaps and ensure progression.
