Vision
We aim to develop confident, resilient learners with deep mathematical understanding through the Ark Maths Mastery programme. We emphasise depth over speed and building strong foundations across number, geometry, measurement and statistics.
Three core principles guide instruction: conceptual understanding, mathematical language and communication, and mathematical thinking. We believe every child can succeed in mathematics when supported by high expectations and a culture that views mistakes as learning opportunities.
How we teach maths
The curriculum uses a cumulative approach where earlier concepts are revisited in new mathematical contexts, helping students make connections. It is knowledge-rich and precisely defined, with core content clearly specified for each year group.
Mathematical language development is emphasised as essential to understanding. Problem-solving is central, enabling students to develop automatic fluency with facts and methods while becoming familiar with various problem types.
Ensuring progress for all
Teachers use multiple strategies to support diverse learners, including those with SEND:
- Pre-unit diagnostic quizzes assess prerequisite skills
- Ready to Progress interventions ensure foundational security
- Daily retrieval tasks check retention of previous learning
- Scaffolded independent tasks allow differentiated access
- A fully resourced curriculum enables personalised planning
