Vision
Our geography programme aims to foster children’s curiosity about the world and their place within it, emphasising their values and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment. Through diverse geographical study, students develop cultural awareness and understand interactions between physical and human processes.
Our Eco-School initiative helps students become global citizens equipped to address sustainability challenges.
Teaching approach
Geography instruction uses a knowledge-rich, concept-led methodology. Key focal areas include:
- Locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical features
- Climate and land use concepts
- Map reading, navigation and fieldwork skills
- Three annual units taught in blocks with two weekly lessons per unit
The curriculum uses carefully sequenced units that allow students to revisit concepts and deepen understanding progressively. Lessons follow a structured format incorporating prior knowledge retrieval, explicit instruction, comprehension checks and application opportunities.
Students explore a wide range of places, cultures and perspectives to develop respect for diverse communities and environments.
Progress monitoring
Assessment strategies include:
- Pre-unit quizzes identifying prior knowledge
- Targeted questioning and hinge questions
- Map-based locational activities three times yearly
- Differentiated tasks encouraging thinking and problem-solving
